What Nungwi is
Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Unguja. When comparing accommodation here, check the exact beach frontage and the activities you want nearby. This guide cannot promise that the sea will be suitable for swimming throughout the day.
Ask a shortlisted property about its own beach access and the arrangements that matter to your group. An area description cannot answer every question about a particular hotel.
The trade you are making
What to compare: the hotel’s beach access, nearby restaurants and the departure points for your chosen boat or dive activities. Confirm the details with the property and operator before booking.
What you give up: quiet, and a sense of being somewhere small. Nungwi is the busiest beach on Zanzibar. It is developed, it is loud in places, and the beach is worked commercially — you will be approached about boat trips. Some people find that lively; others find it relentless.
If your mental image of Zanzibar is an empty stretch of sand, Nungwi is not that image, and you should know it before you pay a deposit.
Who Nungwi suits
Consider Nungwi if its accommodation and activity options fit your plans. For a short trip, compare your hotel’s location with the places you intend to visit and the transfers you will need.
It suits you less if you want a quiet village, you are here to kite (go to Paje), or you find being sold to on a beach exhausting.
Diving from the north

Getting there
Nungwi is at the north tip, 60–80 minutes and about 65 km from the airport, from two transfer operators’ own published rate cards, 31 Jul 2026. On those cards it is the longest of the main beach runs by distance — Matemwe is about 55 km and Paje about 50 km, same cards and date.

Compare Nungwi and Paje using the activities, accommodation and pace you want. For swimming, ask about the exact beach and current conditions; for lessons, ask the school about the location and arrangements for your dates. Neither village name establishes that a particular property or activity will suit you.
