What Nungwi is
Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Zanzibar, and its defining feature is geographic rather than architectural: the tidal range here is far smaller than on the east and south-east coasts. The sea stays swimmable through the day.
That one fact explains almost everything else about the village — the density of hotels, the higher prices, the boat traffic, and the reason it is the default recommendation for a first trip.
The trade you are making
What you gain: water you can actually swim in whenever you want, sunsets over the sea rather than behind you, the widest choice of hotels and restaurants on the island, and dive and snorkel operators running to Mnemba and the northern reefs.
What you give up: quiet, and a sense of being somewhere small. Nungwi is the busiest beach on Zanzibar. It is developed, it is loud in places, and the beach is worked commercially — you will be approached about boat trips. Some people find that lively; others find it relentless.
If your mental image of Zanzibar is an empty stretch of sand, Nungwi is not that image, and you should know it before you pay a deposit.
Who Nungwi suits
It suits you if swimming matters more than solitude, you are on a short trip and want the safest single base, you want sunset views over water, or you are diving the northern sites.
It suits you less if you want a quiet village, you are here to kite (go to Paje), or you find being sold to on a beach exhausting.
Diving from the north
Nungwi is the usual base for the northern dive sites. An Open Water course runs $500–550, from two dive centres’ own published price lists (the upper figure includes one centre’s Pemba rate), 30 Jul 2026 — the detail is on our PADI course prices page.
Getting there
Nungwi is at the north tip, 60–80 minutes and about 65 km from the airport, from two transfer operators’ own published rate cards, 31 Jul 2026. On those cards it is the longest of the main beach runs by distance — Matemwe is about 55 km and Paje about 50 km, same cards and date.
A private transfer runs $35–65 per vehicle — $35 for a sedan carrying up to three and $40 for an SUV or van carrying up to five at TaxiTrip Zanzibar, $65 for a vehicle carrying up to seven at GoZanzibar Transfers, both from their own fixed rate cards, 31 Jul 2026. Per vehicle, not per person.
Worth knowing before you accept a quote: the two operators disagree about whether the extra distance is worth charging for. On their own rate cards, same date, GoZanzibar charges $10 more to Nungwi than to Paje ($65 vs $55), while TaxiTrip charges exactly the same $35 to both — despite Nungwi being some 15 km further on those cards. So if a driver tells you the north costs more because it is further, that is a pricing choice, not a rule — one operator on our list does not price it that way at all.
Where to stay
Empty on purpose. Nungwi or Paje?
If you want to swim on your own schedule, Nungwi. If you want to learn to kite, Paje. If you want quiet, neither — look further down the east coast. The honest summary is that these two villages solve different problems, and the tide is the reason.
