The comparison everyone makes, and why it is wrong
Search for Zanzibar wedding costs and you will find the same framing repeated everywhere: book local and pay hundreds, book through an international agency and pay thousands. The implication is that the gap is markup, and that the fix is to cut out the foreign middleman.
We went looking for the evidence and could not find it. What we found instead was that the comparison is measuring the wrong thing.
The price gap is not about where the operator is based. It is about what is inside the package. A local planner’s $990 (their own published list, 31 Jul 2026) buys a ceremony — planning, setup, decoration, legal paperwork, coordination on the day. The five-figure quotes are whole events — venue hire, catering, accommodation, a full guest list. Those are different products. Putting them in the same table and blaming the difference on nationality is like comparing a wedding dress to a wedding.
The clearest evidence against the usual framing: the most expensive published range we found comes from an operator based in Arusha, Tanzania — local by any definition — and it labels its own figures as estimates, which is why they appear in no table on this page. Meanwhile a resort on the island itself publishes packages from $2,000 to $3,500 (its own page, 31 Jul 2026) — a band that starts inside the top of the independent planners’ range and runs past it.
So the honest question is not “local or international?” It is “what is in this number, and what is not?”
The steel-man: when the usual advice is right
The “book local” advice is not baseless, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.
A foreign agency that subcontracts the entire job to a Zanzibar planner and adds a coordination fee is a markup, and you can sometimes remove it by going direct. That happens. Where the advice fails is as a general rule: it assumes the foreign operator is always adding a layer rather than delivering more, and it gives you no way to tell the difference.
The test that actually works is not the operator’s address. It is whether you can get a line-item breakdown. An operator delivering more should be able to show you what the extra buys. One adding a coordination margin to someone else’s package usually cannot, or will not.
What the published prices actually are

These are “from” prices, and they buy coordination and setup — not a venue for thirty people, and not catering.
One honesty note on our own sourcing: Zanzibar Weddings’ homepage states an “$890 to $3,500 all-inclusive” range while its itemised package list runs $990–2,290. We have used the itemised list, because it is the more specific claim, and we have not resolved the discrepancy with the operator yet.
A resort’s own package

Notice what changes between this table and the one above. The resort’s price includes the venue and starts bundling accommodation and experiences. That is the shape of the real difference: as the number climbs, the package absorbs things you would otherwise buy separately.
That is also the thing to price separately before you accept it bundled. The Diamond package’s Safari Blue excursion, for instance, retails at a published per-person rate we have checked at the operator: what a Safari Blue day trip actually costs.
The figure we withdrew
Our own records previously held “$990–2,290 local vs ~$9,500 international.” We could not find that $9,500 at any operator, and we have withdrawn it rather than repeat it. The withdrawal is logged, dated, on the corrections log.
How to read any wedding quote
The useful skill is not finding the cheapest number. It is working out which of these a quote contains:
- Ceremony only — planner, setup, décor, officiant, paperwork. This is the $500–2,290 band.
- Ceremony + venue — add the resort or beach location, often with a minimum stay attached.
- Ceremony + venue + guests — catering and seating scale with headcount, and this is where quotes diverge fastest. A per-guest figure is the single most important line to extract; one resort we checked charges from $60 per additional guest (its own page, 31 Jul 2026).
- The whole trip — accommodation for you and sometimes for guests, transfers, excursions.
Ask for the quote broken into those four layers. An operator who will not or cannot separate them is telling you something.
What the law says — and the question it leaves open
This section was deliberately empty until 3 August 2026. It is no longer empty, but read the last paragraph before you use any of it.
Tanzania’s Law of Marriage Act requires 21 days’ notice. Where a couple intend to marry, they must give notice to a registrar or registration officer at least twenty-one days before the proposed date, and at least twenty-one days must elapse between that notice and the marriage — Law of Marriage Act, Cap. 29 (Revised Edition 2023), sections 18(1) and 26, read from the Attorney General’s Office edition, 3 Aug 2026.
The 21 days is an objection window, not paperwork. The registrar must publicise the notice locally, any person may lodge an objection, and an objection goes to a court or a Marriage Conciliation Board before the marriage can proceed (sections 19 to 22, same source and date). That is what the wait is for, which is worth knowing before you try to avoid it.
The notice can be dispensed with — by one office, on stated proofs. The Registrar-General may, by licence in the prescribed form, dispense with the notice on proof of five things: no prohibited relationship, no subsisting marriage, both parties of age, any required consent obtained, and “some good and sufficient reason for dispensing with the giving of notice” — section 23(1), same source and date. Proof is by statutory declaration. Where an objection has been lodged with the Registrar-General and not withdrawn, that power is not available (section 24).
We highlight this because the published guidance disagrees with itself. One Tanzanian law firm’s Zanzibar page states there is no waiver available in Zanzibar and the twenty-one days is mandatory; another page on the same firm’s site describes applying to the Registrar of Marriages for a special licence when you have less than twenty-one days. The Act plainly provides the power. We are not telling you a licence will be granted — subsection (e) is a discretion, and we have not seen how it is exercised in practice — only that “there is no waiver” is not what the statute says.
A marriage must be contracted in one of four forms, with at least two witnesses aged eighteen or over — civil form; the rites of a specified religion where both parties belong to it; civil or Islamic form where the intended husband is a Muslim; or civil form or customary rites where the parties follow customary law (sections 25(1) and 27, same source and date). A “symbolic ceremony” sold as a package is none of these. It is not a marriage, and no amount of styling makes it one.
Now the part that governs everything above. We have not established that this Act is what governs a wedding held in Zanzibar. Its own text says a marriage may be contracted “in Tanzania” and lets the Minister appoint “any area of Tanzania” as a registration area, and we found no clause in the sections we read confining it to the Mainland. But Zanzibar runs its own civil registration through the Zanzibar Civil Status Registration Agency, which records marriages and issues the certificate — and we could not read that agency’s own published requirements, because its website serves an invalid security certificate and we will not click through a certificate warning to read a source. A source you cannot reach securely is a source you have not read.
So: everything above is what the Law of Marriage Act says. None of it is the rule for your Zanzibar wedding until someone qualified in Zanzibari law confirms which regime applies. Treat this section as the list of questions to put to your planner and to a lawyer — in writing — not as a checklist you can work through yourself.
What we have not verified
We would rather flag the gaps than fill them with plausible numbers:
- Which marriage law actually governs a Zanzibar wedding, as above. Partly answered on 3 Aug 2026 and still the most important open question on this page.
- Beach and marriage permit fees. Distinct from the marriage law itself: a permit to hold a ceremony on a beach is not the same thing as a valid marriage, and we have found neither from an official Zanzibar source. Until we do, this page says nothing about either fees or validity.
- A worked cost for 30 guests. We have one per-guest figure from one resort; that is not enough to model a real wedding, so we have not pretended to.
- Line items (photography, décor, officiant, transport) at market rates. We publish these when we can trace each to a supplier’s own list, and not before.
- Whether the resort band above holds across properties — we have checked one.
FAQ
How much does a wedding in Zanzibar cost?
It depends entirely on what is in the package. A ceremony from an independent local planner runs $500–2,290, from their own published lists, 31 Jul 2026. A resort’s own package including the venue runs $2,000–3,500 for two, from the resort’s published page, same date. Whole events with guests and catering go well beyond both, and we do not yet have a sourced figure for one.
Why do international planners charge more?
This is the question everyone asks, and the premise does not survive checking. The most expensive published range we found is from a Tanzanian operator — one that labels its own figures as estimates, which is why we do not restate them. What drives price is the scope of the package, not the operator’s nationality. A foreign agency subcontracting the work and adding a fee is a real thing, but you identify it by asking for a line-item breakdown, not by looking at the address.
What does a $990 wedding package actually include?
At the operators we checked, a package at that level covers planning, beach ceremony setup, decoration, legal documentation and coordination — for the couple, or a very small group. It does not include a venue for a large guest list, catering at scale, or accommodation.
Do I need a permit for a beach wedding in Zanzibar?
We still do not answer this, deliberately, and the distinction matters: a beach permit is not the same thing as a valid marriage. We have now read what the Law of Marriage Act requires for the marriage itself, above. We have found no official Zanzibar source for beach or ceremony permit fees at all. If a planner tells you “it’s all included”, ask them to name the permit and the office that issues it — and to put the answer in writing.
How far ahead do I have to give notice?
The Law of Marriage Act requires twenty-one days’ notice, and twenty-one days must pass before the marriage — sections 18(1) and 26, read 3 Aug 2026. The Registrar-General can dispense with that notice by licence on stated proofs, including a good and sufficient reason (section 23). Before you rely on either: we have not confirmed that this Act, rather than a Zanzibar regime, governs a wedding held in Zanzibar. See the section above.
Is a Zanzibar wedding legally valid in my country?
That depends on your own country’s rules for recognising a marriage conducted abroad, and it is not something we will summarise second-hand. Check with your own registry or embassy before you book anything, and treat an operator’s reassurance as a claim to verify, not an answer.
